The 21st of February as International Mother Language Day since 2005 has occupied an undiminished place in Armenian public holidays’ calendar. This year as well both in Armenia and among the Armenians from Diaspora around the world different events, dedicated to preservation and laudation of our precious Armenian language, were held.

At St. Yeghia Sunday school of the Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church in Georgia the day, dedicated to mother language, was marked with an open lesson, which on February 23, at the “Hayartun” Center was conducted by Meritorious Teacher, the Chevalier of the Georgian Order of Honor and of St. Mesrop Mashtots Order of RA, Roza Zohrabyan.

The clergy of the Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church in Georgia, Head of the Department of Native language at the Armenian State Pedagogical University after Khachatur Abovyan, Associate Professor Ashot Galstyan, Armenian intellectuals of Tbilisi, the officials of the “Hayartun” Center, parents and students attended the regular, but not quite ordinary Armenian lesson.

Owing to teacher Roza Zohrabyan’s work experience the lesson turned into literary performance, during which almost 50 students demonstrated their knowledge, acquired here within a short time of learning. The lesson started with Our Father Prayer and ended with anthem performance, dedicated to Mesrop Mashtots’ alphabet. According to the teacher’s plan four related to each other issues were touched upon during the lesson, such as: the mother, the native language, the motherland, and Great Tumanyan. The lesson incorporated the best features: it started with opening speech telling that the ancient Armenian language belongs to the Indo-European language family, continued with quotations from great men about the Armenian language, declamation of poems of different authors, dedicated to the mother tongue, and sayings of great Armenians about the ancient language.

Sunday school students, ages 10 to more than 50 years, recited with not perfect Armenian accent and incorrectly placed emphasis, but were very earnest and sincere.

- Experience surpassed all of our expectations, this high level event was dynamic, informative and in perfect Armenian- the Primate of the Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church in Georgia, His Grace Bishop Vazgen Mirzakhanyan blessed the audience and gave his assessment.

Everyone who delivered a speech expressed their gratitude to the Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church in Georgia for its work, aimed at the preservation of the Armenian national identity, owing to which many Armenians could go back to their roots, learn the Armenian alphabet and its history. The open lesson, dedicated to the mother language, helped to express love and pride for the mother tongue, the feeling which is a part of confirmation of national identity.

At the end of the event the Sunday school students told in Armenian about the feeling of emptiness in their hearts because of lack of native language knowledge, which they tried to fulfill through one-day school.

The event ended with oath of the audience to preserve the mother language and transfer it to a new generation.
