Armenian community of Georgia commemorates the 99th Anniversary of the Armenian Genocide PDF Print E-mail

The 24th of April 2014 marks the 99th Anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. Armenian communities worldwide including the Armenians of Georgia honored the memory of the Armenian Genocide victims.

In Tbilisi, in Surb Etchmiadzin Church at the Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church in Georgia, the Primate of the Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church in Georgia, His Grace Bishop Vazgen Mirzakhanyan celebrated the Divine Liturgy, which was attended by the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Armenia to Georgia Hovhannes Manoukian and diplomatic staff, Georgian MP Ruslan Poghosian, Sergo Vardosanidze, professor and rector of the St. Andrew University at the Georgian Patriarchate, Dmitry Pirbari (Pir Dima), Head of Yezidi Spiritual Council in Georgia, leaders of community-based organizations and a dense crowd of people. At the end of the Divine Liturgy the people gathered near the Khachkar erected in the yard of Surb Etchmiadzin Church, where the Primate of the Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church in Georgia and the clergymen conducted a requiem service.

After that the rioters holding banners and the community and national flags of Armenia and Georgia headed to the Turkish Embassy in Tbilisi, were a peaceful protest was held. Armenian organizations of Tbilisi and representatives from other communities participated in the peaceful gathering. The protestors demanded condemnation, compensation and recognition.

It should be added that on April 21 in the yard of Surb Etchmiadzin Church, on April 22 – in Damala village of Aspindza region, on April 23 – in Ninotsminda the Khachkars (cross-stones) commemorating Armenian Genocide victims were unveiled.
